Hilo, Hawaii - my hometown - is not exactly known for its beautiful beaches. Most are rough, rocky affairs, the bottom covered in sharp stones and slimy growth. But there is some beauty to be found in their austerity.

Making a short exposure of the waves in Hilo would testify to their raw and brutish power. Strangely, capturing tens of them in a single exposure makes them seem placid and calm.

When I was taking this last photo, a kid wading nearby swam closer and asked "what are you doing?" I responded "just taking some pictures of the water." He kind of nodded and swam off looking a little confused. Was he taken aback by the strange monstrosity sitting atop my tripod? Or by the fact that I was taking photos of seaweed and lava rock? Either way, he probably thought I was a loon.
